Ode to the French Radio

The French and I may not agree on too many things (no, the sidewalk is not your dog’s toilet, no it’s not ok to stand that close to me in line at Monoprix, no it is not ok to go on strike just because you “feel like it”) BUT one thing we can agree on is our taste in music. I don’t have a TV here at my apartment, which as devastating as it is to miss out on all six stations (unless of course you have cable, then you have, like, NINE stations, whoa) at least I have my radio to listen to. And if you know me, you know how much I love listening to music so, if it had to be one or the other, I’m glad I have the radio, especially when you consider that I can’t watch Veronica Mars, Jeopardy, or the Real World. So there’s no point to TV here anyway.

What’s great about French radio is not only do they play the most popular American music, but also the most popular British music that doesn’t make it across the pond, such as certified hottie and my future husband, Robbie Williams. He has a smile like the Cheshire Cat that just makes me melt! But, I digress. It’s also really good to listen to all that French music cus it helps me learn. Sometimes I have trouble understanding English lyrics (who am I kidding? I know the lyrics to practically EVERY song) so I feel like I’ve accomplished quite a bit when I find that I can sing along to the songs in French.

What’s also great about French radio is they play a lot of random songs that you just don’t hear on the radio all that often in the US. The first time I heard some of these songs (“Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Come On Eileen”) I was super-psyched, but it turns out these songs aren’t so random. They play them at least three times a day. NO MATTER WHAT STATION YOU ARE LISTENING TO. It’s really quite strange. But you won’t hear me complain as long as I get my daily fix of Huey Lewis served up on a plate of “Power of Love.” That’s right, they love The News here seemingly as much as I do. It’s great!

Now I know you must be thinking, “Maggie this sounds so fabulous! Surely it doesn’t get much better than Huey, but it still feels like there something missing.” And you’d be right on all counts. It DOESN’T get much better, but yet there is something missing in all that. But never fear, that missing element you’re looking for most certainly is there, and it is in the form of one LIONEL RICHIE. Make that Sir Lionel Richie. I don’t know if you know this, but I am a HUGE fan of the Richie. They play “All Night Long” pretty often, but not often enough in my opinion. There really aren’t too many songs out there that are better than “All Night Long.” Another good one is “Say You, Say Me.” As a matter of fact, the French radio and I are so in tune that one day I sat down, turned on the radio, said to myself “I really want to hear ‘Say You, Say Me,’” turned the dial and VOILA! “Say You, Say Me” was most certainly playing! Seriously, those 15 seconds where the song just rocks out are totally awesome. I also once fell asleep with the radio on and woke up at 4 am to hear “All Night Long.” Let me remind you that there are no coincidences in life. Only Cosmic Fate. Now when I was home for Christmas I was in the car with my mom and “Say You, Say Me” came on the XM radio and I started telling her about how the French love The Richie and this song. So she responds “This is a really good song.” So there you have it. It’s Mom-Approved. I haven’t seen my mom show that much emotion over a song since Lou Bega came out with “Mambo Number 5.”

So there ya have it. French radio is pretty awesome.
